| Bio: | I am *so* over 18. Don't even ask. I'm very mature :D Here, have some Weather: Portland ~ Moscow/Pullman (ID/WA) ~ Missoula ~ Idaho Falls ~ Denver ~ (lower row) Los Angeles ~ Reno ~ Phoenix ~ Santa Fe ~ Chichen Itza' I'm preferentially at IJ, in part because of this: squeaky: Fri 08-10-2007 10:11: Welcome Again And as a good guest, I bought the insanely-cheap permaccount and I'm enjoying those rights & privileges, too. Icon hugs. Me? I'm a grad student in the western U.S. with past lives as archaeologist (professionally, for many years) and as a semi-continuing technical writer. I've been a writer partly because all environmental work in the U.S., including "cultural resources" aka archaeology, becomes little more than report-writing and editing after you reach a certain level. And partly because I adore words, grammar, register, semantics, discourse... whew. If I smoked, I would be lighting a cigarette right now. But that's technical writing, see? Not the fun, fan-fic kind, but it has kind of ruined me for fiction writing. (Or that's my excuse; I may also just be srsly uncreative :-) I am often an instructor, always and forever a student, and avoid management like the plague it is, both to me and anyone around. I'm a team member by upbringing and preference. Currently, I'm meant to be writing a dissertation while working my 2+ jobs, learning new areas, and oh yeah, finishing those Here. Support something: Save The World - One Click At A Time! On each of these websites, you can click a button to support the cause -- each click creates funding, and costs you nothing! Bookmark these sites, and click once a day. Hmmph. No button for fandom! Okay, go support fanarchive or another group that's building a Fandom is my passion and diversion. I like it all, especially writing meta and reading slash. This works out well, since as a grad student, I'm supposed to observe those vows: poverty, obedience, and celibacy. The poverty nothing can help except finishing my disser -- (rinse; repeat). So when I get to break one, it's obedience every time :-) With slash, I get the disobedience and divertissement while keeping the vow of chastity, at least fictionally :-) Fandom also turns out to be one giant metaphor for my research, and giant sandbox for it too. My research and teaching ranges through cultural studies, environmental science, ethics, social theory, philosophy of science, feminism, film, social justice, and sustainability. Really, it all fits together! (Amazing what a hammer can do.) I actually have a life beyond that, with family, gardening, knitting, music and politics and such. However, the big D has sunk its teeth into my life, so you'll usually see me waxing fully wonkish, either writing meta or maybe reccing favorite stories and sites. I haven't put out much fic in LJ and probably won't till after D-D-Day (Dissertation Done; followed by life A.D., with luck and a proper job). Online fandom is the greatest contribution to literature since Homer first passed the flask, cleared his throat, and said "Now, if you think Patroclus was his only love, you haven't thought about what Odysseus meant to our brash young hero Achilles. What really passed between the goddess-armed heroes under the star-hung tent of night? Listen now while I tell you a tale you will not forget...." Except those tales didn't get written down (darn!) until LJ came along. (Although some of those vasepaintings do a pretty spectacular job illustrating them. Never make the mistake of thinking Classicists are dull conservatives. Those vases, that literature, the frescoes -- are some serious kink! The Miller Test was crafted at least in part to let the high-ups keep their --> My Biggest Kinks. Praxis, theoretically informed and playfully unfurled. Yanno, like fandom. I love the cyber-radicalism of LJ fandom, and all its sweet ironies: using cutting-edge capitalist-built technology to practice countercultural communitarian revolution; building a liberatory close-knit community in a distributed global environment; wreaking social revolution by quietly reading and writing fiction. Staying loose yet coming together when a FanLib or WFI intrudes. The activity, generosity, and dynamic evolution of fandom amaze me. It adds new definition to the term creative writing. --> The Word of Warning. Anything I do post here will undoubtedly be opinion-laden and may from time to time be very slash-centric. If so, it will concern themes and/or content that is mature, adult, erotic, vulgar, offensive, anything else that hetero-normatives and pre-postmoderns are guaranteed (we hope) to hate. Yay. If not to your taste, please go away. If up your alley, please stay. Oh yes, and I also say what I think about authors. If you want to idolize JKR or any other mass-market writing phenom, do it somewhere else. In fact, if you have any difficulty at all understanding what "fallacies" mean - ad populum, ad hominem, ad baculum, intentional, pathetic, causal, or the many other types of illogic and irrelevance passed off as rhetoric and reasoning in these modern times, go away and learn them; you'll just provoke laughter and exasperation here. --> Friending Policy. Umm, I don't really have one? I don't mind if you friend me, and you don't need to tell me if you do. And if you decide you don't need to read my few entries, decided opinions, or wonkish prose, you don't need to tell me why your defriending me, either :-) I'll try to respond and interact but don't always have time, so please forgive me if I'm slow or off doing something else for a bit. I might periodically defriend a bunch of comms and ljs and if I do, it's not personal; and if you object, just send me woobies so I know why. And oh yeah, *see above* -- I will talk about subversive and sexual and liberatory projects and practices, so if you are not legal to read this where you live, please don't, or at least be prepared for a scolding and defriending if I find out. ![]() Create your own visitor map!
